E. Evidence of Technical Accomplishment

CharmBadge System – Charmed Technology

The Charmbadge is an electronic conference badge that uses infrared, line-of-sight technology to communicate with other CharmBadges in its viewing area. Each Charmbadge has a unique ID that is associated with the attendee wearing it through a database lookup. That ID is passed to other CharmBadges in the viewing area and stored along with the interaction time. At any time, the CharmBadge interaction information can be downloaded at a CharmBadge download center and stored in the CharmBadge database for later viewing via the CharmBadge Information Access Center website.  Brian Jones developed the CharmBadge Download Center Kiosk application; contributed ideas on functionality of the hardware and CharmBadge conference management application; designed web pages for, and contributed ideas and quality assurance to the database/web functionality for the CharmBadge Information Access Center; and acted as liaison with conference planners and attendees.

Biomedical Engineering Virtual Labs

A set of virtual laboratory procedures currently in development to provide undergraduate students of the Georgia Tech/Emory Biomedical Engineering program a better understanding of the protocol before entering the lab. The modules feature lab equipment developed in Flash, incorporated into Macromedia Director and delivered through the internet. Detailed information about the experiments is presented in an HTML frame with animations, video and illustrations to reinforce the procedure used in the interactive HTML frame. A secondary web site allows the instructor to manage student access to the site, view students’ performance and design new review quizzes for each experiment.

The Mating Game

This interactive game was designed for use on a kiosk that resides in Zoo Atlanta’s Ford African Rain Forest exhibit for a web. The game teaches visitors and users how gorillas are chosen for mating. The game utilizes a visual format similar to TVs "The Dating Game" to determine the best of three bachelor mates for a gorilla bachelorette based on Species Survival Plan coordinators’ standards. On-line at www.imtc.gatech.edu/TMG_DSL.swf

i-irasshai (formerly virtual japan)

An immersive, cultural learning tool designed to supplement students enrolled the Irasshai Japanese Language Learning program available through Georgia Public Broadcasting. The program allows students to explore Japanese culture in an authentic environment of interactive 360 degree photo-realistic images with “show me” hotspots that when clicked provide further information on Japanese background and beliefs related to the items. 50 locations (e.g. host family home, market place, shrine, school, and temple), 60 Shockwave activities (e.g. how to buy train tickets, how to order and eat sushi, and ho to order and pay for produce at the market), and HTML quizzes reinforce the students’ learning experience. The student may choose a goal-driven exploration where they select from 50 “to-do” lists with three or four related tasks that they must accomplish, or to explore with their own agenda. The program is available at www.imtc.gatech.edu/vrjapan,  www.gpb.org/peachstar/i-irasshai, or on CD-ROM.

National Security for the 21st Century

Prompted by the work of Senator Sam Nunn, this CD-ROM was developed in conjunction with the Georgia Tech Library to inform high school and higher education students of the national security risks we face in the new century. The program goes into great depth about the history, current events and future risks associated with nuclear, biochemical and informational terrorism. The program provides simulated scenarios of how these terrorist tactics might be carried out and who would be affected as well as videos communicating the views of Sam Nunn and experts in the national security realm on what needs to be done to improve national security.

Atlanta History Center: Down the Fairway with Bobby Jones Kiosk

Designed for a permanent exhibit at the Atlanta History Center, the kiosk features three sections: Classic Instruction, Tour of the EastLake Golf Course and a Research Web Site selectable through touch sensitive buttons incorporated into the kiosk enclosure. Classic Instruction allows the user to explore the differences between classic golf instruction, through the audible words, video and images of Bobby Jones, and modern golf instruction, through the text, video and images of Ben Crenshaw. Tour of the East Lake Golf Course is an interactive history and tour of this famous Georgia golf course. This section features three videos about the courses history and an interactive tour with par – 1 seamless 360 degree images where the user can “look around” the course and clubhouse along with the yardage, hazards, and design for each hole. This section also presents the user with the opportunity to play hole 15 with Bobby Jones, by compositing classic footage of Bobby with modern course photographs. The user must choose the appropriate clubs and rely on some luck to keep up with Bobby. The Research Web Site was developed for researchers interested in learning about the life of Bobby Jones and history of golf in Georgia.

Orthographic Texture Mapper

A project to develop a technique and software for the generation of long orthographic images from video sequences.  This software extracts sections from each video frame, corrects for vertical displacement, and longitudinal distortion utilizing image processing techniques.  These realistic texture maps can be used in gaming, simulation, and panoramic applications.

Electronic House Call System

A collaborative project with the Bio-Engineering Interactive Technology Center (BITC) at Georgia Tech and the Medical College of Georgia to develop an interactive medical monitoring system linked via a network to a central nurses’ monitoring station.  The system provides the patient with the necessary monitoring equipment to perform a number of tests from the patient’s living room.  The medical equipment is linked to a computer that determines whether the tests have been completed successfully and sends the test data automatically to the central monitoring station, where it is analyzed and stored.  The system also features a video conferencing system - to allow visual monitoring and communication with the patient’s doctor at the monitoring station - and on-line video help - to aid the patient during measurements.  The systems are currently in use in various patient’s homes in a test region.

FoodPac Frying Simulator

A collaborative project with the University of Georgia and the Collaborative Product Development Laboratory (CoLab) at Georgia Tech to develop a visualization software system simulating the physical and chemical changes that occur during the deep-fat frying of various FoodPac products.  Mathematical models and software algorithms were developed to provide the basic engine for the simulator.

Michael C. Carlos Virtual Museum and Kiosk

A three year project to develop an interactive information system for visitors to the Museum.  The interactive kiosks provide in-depth artistic, historic and cultural information about the artifacts and collections housed in the Museum.  The installation consists of six touch-screen kiosks placed in the permanent galleries of the Museum.

Life College Kiosk

An interactive full-screen video kiosk was developed to promote Life College at a conference commemorating 100 years of chiropractic medicine.  The kiosk was later updated to highlight academic and student life for prospective students.  The kiosk consisted of a computer and television monitor interfaced with a trackball to present the information.

Sam Nunn: The Man from Perry CD-ROM

Interactive CD-ROM that provided educational information for junior high and high school students documenting the private life and political career of former Senator Sam Nunn.  The staff of the Georgia Tech Library and IMTC collaborated to produce this unique educational tool which incorporated interviews with the Senator, his family, friends and colleagues.

High Museum Visual Arts Learning Space Kiosks

A collection of four kiosks describing the artists’ use of color, composition, light, and line in their works of art. The kiosks are arranged on a raised platform that allows the user to maintain the line of sight with the works of art while in a seated at the kiosk. Each kiosk presents information about how the artist produced a specific effect utilizing one of the four fundamentals of art theory.
