Description:

In the past, audio has been relatively ignored by user interface experts, multimedia designers, game developers, and researchers. However, with the advent of powerful consumer level audio hardware and with users expecting increasingly sophisticated, immersive, and usable software the field of computer audio has become very important. This course will span the spectrum of the field to provide a survey of computer audio that will be useful to students in computer science, HCI, information design, and psychology. We will begin the course at the low level, covering how people hear, as well as how sound can be represented, synthesized, processed, and spatialized. We will then progress to examining current research in audio including its uses in interfaces, virtual environments, gaming, and film. Homework assignments will allow students to experiment with sound and gain expertise in the areas mentioned above. There will also be a large group project tailored to the interests and experience of the group members.
